Chicago Freight Tunnel, c.1908. Most people are unaware of the 60 miles of service tunnels that exist underneath the streets of the Loop. The tunnels were initially used to lay telephone and electric cables but soon were used to deliver goods and freight to businesses downtown in order to reduce traffic congestion above ground. The tunnels were abandoned in the late 1950’s.
