This to me is the most interesting thing I’ve ever posted. I could stare at these for hours.

Two meticulous maps showing the names and locations of every brothel, bar, casino and saloon that existed in the Cheyenne and Levee Districts of Chicago between 1870 and 1905.

Completed by Levee historian Bryan Lloyd.

This marks the 2000th post on Calumet 412!

As with the 1000th post, I’m dedicating it our patron saints, Ada and Minna Everleigh, the sister-proprietors of the Everleigh Club ( CAL-umet 412 was their telephone number), Chicago’s most infamous “sporting club.”

Thanks to everyone for following the site…I hope you’re enjoying viewing and learning about Chicago history along with me!

Perhaps Chicago’s most infamous bar, it was run by Michael “Hinky Dink” Kenna, a.k.a., the Lord of the Levee. Kenna was the alderman for the First Ward for many years and ran a protection/collection racket which kept every corrupt saloon, brothel and gambling house open despite contrary laws.

1,000th Post!

In honor of the 1,000th post on Calumet 412, I thought it would only be right to feature the site’s patron saints, the Everleigh sisters.

As I’ve stated before, Calumet 412 was the phone number at Chicago’s (if not the world’s) most famous brothel, The Everleigh Social Club.

To me, Madames Minna and Ada reflect the entrepeneurial, scandalous and eudemonious spirit of our great city.

If you haven’t read Karen Abbott’s, Sin in the Second City, do it now…it’s perfect on it’s own or a great accompaniment to Erik Larson’s, Devil in the White City. You’ll love the city even more for it!

P.S. - Thank you so much for your compliments and kind words. I truly love doing this!
